my father

Back in the day, as in a few weeks ago, it was Father’s Day! About a week before that, my dad was in town and somehow, I managed to pre-plan a father/daughter date with him ahead of time, so we could celebrate how great of a dad he is while we were together. This was no small feat. I am an organized person. I have my stuff together. One would think that I would be all over birthdays and holidays and buying christmas presents early and all that jazz. No. I am horrible at all these things. Case in point, I just learned the date of one of my best friend’s birthdays…the day after it. “Oh my goodness, there are birthday balloons on your counter…your birthday is in June…I have no idea what date it is…when was it?!?!” Oh, yeah. Yesterday. Friend points for Jenny = 0. Sigh. So this really was amazing that I was able to plan ahead for Father’s day. I even sent an invitation for our date night to him the week before his visit, a la snail mail. And, sidenote on that, I was cutting it close and had to call him as he was leaving his office to make sure he had checked his work mail that day (he hadn’t) so he would get it before he left town to drive down here. Whew. So somehow everything worked out and we had a lovely night. We even took a picture. What?!

We started with beer and pizza at Yia Yia’s, an awesome local Lincoln place. I pride myself in introducing my father to the world of beer a few years ago in Colorado when I actually bought him his first beer. Ever. Yep – that’s my family. It’s slightly upside down. So that was a must on our date. Then we drove out to a fancy pants golf course club in Lincoln just for dessert, because, ya know, I’m too cheap to buy him the whole dinner there. Too stuffy. So we sat out on their amazing log deck and enjoyed the view and the chocolate. Yum.
I of all people have great reason to celebrate my dad. He is so much to me. I am not one of those girls with daddy issues. I have a solid and humble and honest example to look to because Jesus ransomed him twenty years ago, and then brought the rest of my family to a lasting and secure faith in Him through my dad. Dave Moffatt, you love well. You are selfless and generous. You have given so much of your life to your kids, and we are so thankful to you. Also, you are one of the most hilarious people I know, and I am forever in your debt for my sense of humor, among other things. Love you, dad!
